So many people ask the question “What do you do?”  This, to me, is not the REAL question that should be asked.  The real question should be “What can YOU do for me?”  To even begin to answer the question….you have to learn a bit about the other person.  Otherwise you are just making stuff up that you think this person needs.

Ask me what I can do for you?  And I will ask you these questions:

1.  What are you wanting to accomplish right now?
2.  What one thing would make a positive difference in your life right now?
3.  Who is your ideal client?  What makes them ideal?
4.  Who SPECIFICALLY do you help?  How do you know you help them?
5.  What do you know about Social Networking for business?
6.  What is the biggest challenge you have with Social Networking?
7.  What types of professionals would you like to be connected to? How would that help you?

You see, if I understand the answers to these questions then I can quickly understand if I can do anything for you.   When I meet someone for the first time, I am looking for how I can make a positive difference in their life.  I am not looking to SELL them on anything.  I am just trying to understand how I might connect them to someone I know.  In fact, I usually forget all about what I do because I am so interested in learning about what they do and who they help.

In Social Networking, I see so many people “pushing their products” on other people or as my mentor, Shelby Collinge would say “people are pimping themselves out”.   If you stop to learn more about the other person FIRST, you will create a quality connection.  WARNING! Quality connections could lead to lifetime relationships.  SMILE

Some of the world’s top experts have become my friends as a result of the connections I created for them.  It wasn’t about the money, it was about supporting their dreams and vision.

I challenge you (EWWW!  Strong language) to try this on right now!!  Make a point to meet someone new and ask them the above questions.  If you need, print them out and carry them with you.  I can guarantee that no one will take offense if you whip out these questions and read them to you.  You can preface it with “I find you to be fascinating.  When I meet really important and fascinating people I like to ask them a few questions.  Sometimes I get a little nervous.  I wrote the questions down so I wouldn’t miss asking them.  Would it be okay if I read you questions about you?”

One of the biggest questions I get regarding blogs is what do I put into it.  Content can be yours or other people.  If you are using other people’s information, be sure to summarize and use pieces of their content.  Search engines look for fresh content.  Duplicate content can actually hurt your rankings.  You can embed YouTube videos into your blog and then write a summary.  Remember with videos, search engines can search them for keywords.  You will want to still write a summary.  Most business professionals are sitting on a ton of content.  If you have newsletters, articles, books, brochures or marketing materials, you have a lot of content to pull from.  Another great source is questions you receive in your email box.  Here are some ideas for blog posts.

  • Review of a Product/Service (yours of someone elses)

  • Interview a top expert

  • Video Review (yours or someone elses)

  • Report on an event you attended

  • Answer a question someone asked you about your business.
