When your world stops

Stop_sign_world_stops
It is amazing how one simple slip can bring everything into perspective.  On Thanksgiving, my daughter and I redecorated her room.  She is five years old and pink is her favorite color.  We painted one of her walls a light pink, we bought a pink dresser and put pink flower lights all over.  The room became complete with a loft bed and a desk with a computer.  When it was all complete, the room glowed with this happy pink color. My daughter was beaming from ear to ear and then said, “You are the best Mommy ever!”.

Not even a week later, the joy of the room was dulled.  While eating dinner, my daughter got up to get a blanket from her room.  Just a few minutes later, we heard a thud.   The following 2 minutes, my life came to a complete stop.   I found my daughter laying on her back completely dazed and confused.  She had a hard time recognizing me.  She was able to tell me she fell from the top of her bed while getting a blanket.  She said, “I just slipped and fell on my neck”.  We immediately called 911.  I tried to comfort my daughter and calmly explain how important it was she stay awake and that she lie still.  Thoughts were flying through my head, “will she be a vegetable?”, “will she be crippled?”, “what I have I done to my daughter?”, “how can I help her?”.

It seemed hours had passed by and I began to say “Where are the paramedics? What is taking so long?”.  It had been 2 minutes since we called and it felt like an eternity.  You know something serious is happening when 2 ambulances, 1 fire truck and 8 medics show up at your house.  Within in minutes, they had her on a board with her neck and head secure.  I was in the ambulance with my daughter.

All I know is the next time I see flashing lights come down the street, I will immediately pull over and pray for the family in there.  It is a frightening and helpless experience.

The next few hours proved to be some of the toughest for me.  Somehow I was able to maintain composure so I could reassure my daughter that everything was really okay.  After 2 Cat Scans, several X Rays and thorough monitoring, the doctors gave me the best news ever.  She was going to be just fine.  She experienced a Moderate Concussion.

Having been in the hospital for over 24 hours, I had missed a day of work.  It felt like time stood still.  When I returned to the office, I realized how important it is to create a business that works without you.  I thought a lot about the other families that go through emergencies with their children.  Nothing else matters except for the safety and happiness of our children.

The experience gave me a much deeper appreciation for the time I get to spend with my daughter.  Reading books, singing songs and snuggling with her are even more enjoyable.

I would love to hear what you have learned from life’s unexpected moments.  Please comment on the lessons you have gained.

What do we all have in common?

Reflection_what_we_all_have_in_comm
It is amazing to think about this.  Every human being in the world has this in common.

  1. We all have lungs and require air to breathe.
  2. We were created by two people.
  3. Basic things like food, water and air is needed to survive.

There is one thing that most people forget that we all have in common…..and that would be having DREAMS!  No matter what age, race, education level, financial status or culture, everyone has a dream.  Some of the greatest teachers in the world have had dreams that they made come true.

In early 1961, John F. Kennedy said “I believe that this
nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out,
of landing a man on the moon, and returning him safely to earth.”

And sure enough in the summer of 1969, a man walked on the moon and made it back to earth safely. John F. Kennedy didn’t even get to see his dream become reality. His dream left him a legacy that is written in the history books.

Martin Luther King, Jr. is famous for his “I have a dream speech” where he says “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true
meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men
are created equal.”  His dream is becoming a reality.  Huge shifts in human equality have been made and the level of consciousness around this have been substantially raised.

Dreams are powerful.  Dreams move and motivate us to make the impossible, possible.  The greatest mentor in my life has been Bob Larsen.  He has worked with the nation’s wealthiest families and CEOs of the nation’s top privately held companies.  He once told me he was in the “Dream Building Business”.  He said he talks with his clients to understand their dreams and then builds the bridges from where they are to their dreams.  What an amazing business to be in!!!

Now, in my own business, we help our clients build membership websites.  The motivation to build a membership website is all about the client’s dreams.  The first step we have them take is to write down their 100 dreams.  Something amazing happens when you do this exercise.  Imagine if you could build a website that would produce unlimited income for your and your family.  How things would you do differently in your life?  What would be a dream you would like to see become a reality?  Please share your comments.

Here are my 3 biggest dreams:

  • To help 10,000 people get 10 of their dreams.
  • To build a foundation for kids and adults where they can take any idea they have and turn it into a business.  They get rewarded for succeeding and rewarding for failing.  Through the process they learn about money management.
  • To live to be a healthy and active 90 year old and have my daughter be there to celebrate with me.

2008 – Are you ready?

2008_are_you_ready
It is hard to believe the year is almost over.  I am thinking about 2008 and all the exciting things in place.  Each year I like to look back and see what I have learned for the past year.

What I learned in 2007:

Speaking is my heart. Thanks to T.Harv Eker for allowing me to speak at the World’s Greatest Marketing Event.  For about 2 minutes I understood what it felt like to be a Rock Star.  I am realigning my company to get me speaking more.

Don’t assume anything in business.
Even when things seem really clear be sure to get things in writing and have both parties explain expectations and create milestones.  Makes a powerful partnership.

Family really is the most important thing.
My father passed away suddenly this year from a heart attack.  I realize that it is very easy to say “I am busy right now…..how about we get together next month”.   I won’t ever get a second chance to say good bye to my dad.

Everyone needs a great coach, a great mentor and a great team. For years I have thought I needed other people to help me run my company.  I have been working with Dave Luke of The Growth Coach, Eric Lofholm and Dr. Mark Waller to get all things working together.  Now my head, heart and passions are working together.  It is amazing how much faster you can move with great Mentors and Coaches.

Dreams do come true. My business partner, Mark Bush, is proof of that. He has set such a great example of what is possible when you put your ego aside and focus on your dream.  We have been working on his membership website for over a year.  It will be launched in a big way in 2008.  I learned that synergy makes dreams come true.  I keep reviewing my 100+ dreams and now I see them coming into plain site.

Planning creates time. The irony about this is that it takes some time to plan.  In the long run, you can do a lot more with a little planning.

Acting like a kid is FUN! The most fun I have had has been being totally silly with my daughter.  We both laughed until we cried from doing the craziest dances while making up silly songs.  Maybe I should publish some of those for a good laugh.

I would love to hear what lesson you gained from 2007.  Please share your comments.
