"Together Everyone Wins"
Sometimes we get so focused on generating business that we forget to step back and really look at the big picture. Every once in awhile I like to publish stories to make sure our hearts are in the right place. This true story always reminds me of what really matters. Making money is not what motivates us. It is something much bigger than ourselves. If we continue to pay attention to what really motivates us, we will always win.
Based on a true story….
It was the biggest race of their lives. They had spent months and months in training. Now, 9 athletes stood at the starting line for the 100 yard dash. There were hundreds of people watching them in the stands.
When the gun was shot, all the racers got off to a good start. Each racer was committed to finishing the race. In a matter of seconds, one of the racers stumbled and fell to the ground.
Remarkably, another one of the racers stopped and went back to make sure the fallen racer was okay. It was as if you could feel his defeat. When he began to cry, his fellow racer put his arm around him and told him “It will be okay”.
The other racers noticed what happened. They slowed down and one by one turned around to come back to the crying boy. One of the racers came back and kissed him on the forehead and said, “This will make it better”
Then all nine racers stood up, linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood and the cheering went on for several minutes.
These highly trained and competitive racers showed what the true spirit of the game is. This was one of the biggest races of their lives. It was the Special Olympics.
This was a powerful lesson for everyone who attended The Seattle Special Olympics. People who were there are still telling the story… Why? Because deep down we know this one thing:
What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves.
What matters in this life is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.
Think about this…..
In life it is not about who finishes the race first.
In life it is about every racer finishing together.
What are you racing to do? Who are you leaving behind while you are moving so fast? Do you have a story or quote that keeps you in check with your priorities? Please comment.
