Always look for the lesson

Look for the lesson

Look for the lesson

A lesson to learn…

I had been in sales for several years.  My new job covered the entire United States.  To gain new clients, I would call top buyers all over and start a conversation with them.  After a few months, I was beginning to develop many powerful relationships.  One of my favorite calls was to a buyer named Tom.  He was in Texas.  We talked almost every week.

I had several people I was talking with in Texas and thought it would be good to fly out and meet all these voices I had relationships with.  Tom was the one I was most looking forward to meeting because I felt we had an amazing connection.

He was one of my first appointments and I knew this would be a great kickoff to a week long meeting marathon with over 20 people.

When I finally got to meet Tom face to face I almost jumped up and down with excitement.  Tom was as cold as ice.  He was frozen.  His face was as withdrawn and lifeless.  It was awkward.

We started the meeting and I began asking questions.  I was receiving one word answers.  With each answer I was becoming more and more uncomfortable.  At one point I said, “You know Tom, if I came at a bad time, I can come back, I will be here all week and I can reschedule”   He said, “That is okay.  I am glad you are here”.  His mechanical and robot response confused me even more.

At this point I could feel myself start to sweat as if I was being interrogated.  I thought to myself “How do I get out of here?”  I wanted to run out there as fast as I could.  Somehow I held it together and finished the way you would if you were eating an unpleasant meal at a favorite relatives.   I was hoping that my half smiles, sweating and being uncomfortable wasn’t too obvious.

Finally the meeting was over and Tom thanked me twice for being there. When I got to the car I started to replay the events in my head.  “Had I met with the wrong person?”  What in the world happened in there?  Where do I go from here?

Then I could hear one of my mentor’s words in my head.  No matter what, look for the lesson and ALWAYS, no matter how bad the meeting is, write a thank you card.   I started to think about what I had learned.

Come to think about it.  I had just gotten into a plane and flown in to meet a top buyer and didn’t even have an agenda.  I thought about how the meeting might have went if I had asked those questions before I got there and then had an agenda.  In fact, I thought about all my appointments and how much of a difference I could make with that simple strategy.

I wrote my thank card and it went something like this:

Tom,

Thank you for one of the best meetings ever.  You gave me such a powerful lesson today.  I realized I could have really made an impact by having an agenda and sending my questions to you prior to the meeting.  I want to let you know what an amazing difference you have made in my career with just that lesson.  Each time we talk on the phone I seem to gain another valuable piece of information.  Thank you so much for giving me so much.  I am excited about working with you now and in the years to come.

Respectfully yours.

In all honesty, when I sent the card, I wasn’t really sure what would happen.  I had put a follow up call in my schedule for 3 weeks from the meeting.

2 weeks later, I was sitting in my office and my phone rang.  It was Tom.  He seemed more like himself.  I immediately said, “Tom!  What a great surprise.”

He said, “You know, I have been wanting to call you for the past two weeks to apologize.  The appointment we set was the highlight of my week.  Before you came, I was really looking forward to meeting you.  When you showed up I had no idea that you would have eyes that look just like my son.  You see, 3 months before you came here, my son committed suicide.  It was all I could do to keep it together during our meeting.  You remind me so much of him and just having you there gave me joy.  I was so close to bursting into tears.  When you left, I figured you would never want to speak to me again. Then, your thank you card arrived.  I have read your card over and over again.  The days that are particularly hard, I read it a few times.  It has brought me such hope.   Thank you.

As you can imagine, I was speechless.  I could not speak through my tears.  This experience taught me something so powerful that I will never forget:

You never know what is happening for another person or what they are going through.

Sometimes we get in such a hurry to make things happen, we forget to take the time to enjoy the process. Had I rushed through this or blown this appointment off, I may have missed out on making a difference in my life and Tom’s life.

Always look for the lesson in everything you do.  Take time to enjoy the process.

By the way….

What I Learned from Joel Bauer

Joel Bauer Trains Millionaires

Joel Bauer Trains Millionaires

Every once in awhile you stumble upon something that helps you grow your business at a rapid rate.  I had the pleasure of meeting Joel Bauer early this year.  In a very short amount of time, I was able to learn proven strategies from him and then implement them into my business.  If you are doing anything with Social Networking, this is the perfect compliment.  If you are thinking about starting or growing a business, Joel Bauer’s training is a MUST!

The results?  I implemented 10% of what he taught me and it generated double the sales.  That motivated me to do more.  So far, I have implemented a total of 20% of what he has taught me and it has tripled my sales.  I have generated an extra $30,000 this year and I expect that number to double by the end of the year.  It happened so quickly and it was so easy I was amazed.

Here are a few things I have learned so far:

  1. By making subtle changes to what I wear, I can increase how I am perceived.  I can command attention faster.  (Hey, I am an only child so getting attention is a great thing for me. ) It sounds really basic, but this has made a huge impact for me.
  2. I now have a powerful answer when someone asks me “What do you do?”  In fact, just 1 day after creating this at Joel’s event, I was on a plane flying home.  The lady next to me asked me “What do you do?”  When I told her (using what Joel had taught me) I couldn’t even finish what I was saying.  She was jumping up and down in her chair and saying, “Is that what you do?  I need that”.  When I finished she said, “WOW!  I am so glad I met you, can I have a card?”  Ironically…I had packed my cards and just said “No” and before I could explain she said, “Of course you don’t….you don’t need cards”.  Never has that happened to me before meeting Joel.
  3. My digital camera is now my friend.  I don’t go any where without it.  I have produced massive opportunities just by having my camera.  Joel teaches you simple things to create massive publicity and testimonials using your digital camera.
  4. Through some powerful exercises, Joel gets you connected to your heart.  You are able to express what you are passionate about very quickly.  Once you identify that, he shows you how to then speak from the heart in everything you do.   Now, when I speak, people come up to me and hug me and say “thank you!  I really get who you are and how you can help me”.
  5. LEVERAGE.  Joel shows you how to leverage what you are doing so you generate massive results from each action.  As he says, “Most businesses fail because they don’t have a system”.  He gives you a system so easy a child could do it.
  6. Tell people what you do GUARANTEED.
  7. Simplify. Simplify. Simplify.

Joel is one of the world’s top mentors.  He has worked with Mark Victor Hansen (The Chicken Soup for the Soul Author), Robert Allen (Multiple Streams of Income Mentor), Francis Ford Coppola and Bill Clinton.  He is one of the most amazing speakers I have ever seen.  He has spoken on the stage with Tony Robbins, T. Harv Eker, Les Brown and pretty much every top speaker in the world.

Bottom line, what he does WORKS! It is proven.  If you have a desire to create massive results in your business right now, I would love, absolutely adore having you at a half day training with Joel Bauer in Newport Beach, CA on October 22nd.  You can learn more by clicking here.

Powerful lessons for life

In Loving Memory of Dr. Randy Pausch

This is one of the most powerful talks I have ever heard.  It helped me put things into perspective.  I was struggling with a business issue and it felt tiny after watching this video.  Some of the key things highlighted in this video:

  1. This talk is about life not death.  It is about achieving your childhood dreams.
  2. When someone is going to ride you – they care to make you better….when they don’t say anything it means they have given up on you.
  3. The brick walls are there not to keep you out.  They are there to prove to you how much you want something.
  4. Have a sense of fun in everything you do.
  5. In life we get a choice:  People or Things.  What really matters the most?
  6. Which are you in life?  Are you a tigger (energetic, optimistic, curious, enthusiastic, they have fun) or an eyeore
  7. If you want to achieve your dreams: Work and play with well with others.
  8. Tell the truth.
  9. Good apology has 3 parts.  1.  I am sorry 2.  It was my fault 3.How do I make it right?
  10. If you wait long enough people will show their good side.  Be patient.
  11. Show gratitude.
  12. If you live your life correctly, the dreams will come to you.

What are some of your life lessons? Who are your life teachers? Please share your thoughts.

What is the SUM of your life?

Your life matters.

Your life matters.

Have you ever thought about what people would say about you once you have “graduated” from this life?  What would you like them to say?  Some people live their life by design but for most they kind of stumble through life.  What if you had a chance to look at your life and create whatever you wanted?  I found this exercise to be extremely empowering.  It allows you to really think about what you want to create so you can live your life with purpose and by design.   This was inspired by the poem “The Dash” by Linda Ellis.

WARNING!  This may bring up emotions for you.  This is totally normal.  Emotion is what moves us into action.  Allow this emotion to move you into your success.  The only person stopping you from what you want in life is you.  You have the power to do anything you put your mind to.  I believe in each of you.

When you “graduate” from this place and everyone has gathered to share their memories, thoughts and appreciation for your life.  How do you want them to remember you?  What do you want to leave as a legacy?  What did you contribute to this world in your lifetime.

Write it as if you could wave a magic wand and everything you ever wanted would happen and then some.  Write your perfect life in the Eulogy.

  1. Read “The Dash” poem before starting this exercise.
  2. Sit in a quiet place and close your eyes.  Imagine that your life has turned out exactly the way you wanted to from this place forward.  Imagine that all your dreams and your passions have been fulfilled.  What has happened in your life?  Visualize this and stay in this place.  Notice what you see and how you feel.  Most importantly, notice how you feel.  Put your hand over your heart as you feel this.
  3. Open your eyes, write down what you saw and what you felt in great detail.
  4. Write down a list of what you accomplished when everything in your life turned out.
  5. Answer these questions – based on your life turning out exactly the way you designed and that your dreams and passions have been fulfilled: (BE VERY SPECIFIC)
    • Who did you help? How did you help them.
    • What kind of person are you?
    • What did you do for the world? Your community?  Your family?
    • What positive change resulted because of what you created?
    • What did you create in your life?
    • What did you accomplish?
    • What put smiles on faces as a result of who you are and what you did?
    • If the paper could do one article on you – what would the article be about?
    • Describe your family, your friends, your business.
  6. Now, write 2 or 3 paragraphs about your life as if the person who loves you the most in this world wrote it.  They are honored to share about you and your life with others.
  7. Write your eulogy in your own handwriting.  Read it several times.  Make any necessary adjustments.
  8. If you feel comfortable, create a blog post and share your eulogy with the world.  Mine is below.  Please feel free to comment and share the link to your eulogy.

Sabrina Gibson lived a long, healthy and fulfilled life.  She looked 20 years younger than her actual age and had the energy of a 18 year old.  Knowing Sabrina meant knowing that your life was going to be better.  She literally gave people their lives back by taking a stand for their possibility. She listened carefully to everyone and instantly connected them with resources and people who could help them reach their dreams faster.

She was a living example of how to work smarter not harder.  She had the perfect balance of work and spent most of her time enjoying her children, grandchildren, family and friends.  She always made time to give a “hand up” and was a catalyst for getting people to take positive action in their life.  She was a powerful speaker, speaking on stages all over the world.  She spoke to over 2 million people.  She inspired and motivated many people with her real stories of overcoming adversity.  She was one of the greatest teachers in entrepreneurship, marketing and online strategies.

She entertained many with her funny stories and great sense of humor and taught by example.  Her life was a testimony that you can create millions from nothing, work little and generate massive results and do anything you put your mind to.  She built several multi-million dollar companies using her passion, drive and her attitude of “never giving up”.  She continually gave back in a generous fashion.  Her Foundation will leave a beautiful legacy of teaching, kids and adults, money management and entrepreneurship.

She was living proof that believing in yourself and taking action on your goals works. Her passionate spirit will be a part of everyone who met her. Her belief in God inspired hundreds to learn more about the truth the Bible teaches. If you met Sabrina, then more than likely you got a hug.  If you knew Sabrina, then you knew what it felt like to be loved.  She was one of the most loved and respected human beings on the face of the earth.

You don’t need a website any more!

No more websites

No more websites

With this blog post, I would imagine there will be some pretty upset web developers out there.  GOOD!  For the last 9 years I have sold websites to small business owners.  Not just any website, but Smart And Sticky Websites.

For the last year, I have been advising my clients to avoid spending money on a useless “smart and sticky” website and build a wordpress blog.  Why would I say this?  Here are just a few of the reasons:

  1. With a WordPress Blog (assuming you self host which is recommended), anything you post is already search engine friendly.  By adding some extra sites to PING, you can get your blog publicized pretty fast.  In laymen terms, you can get more people to see your blog very quickly.
  2. Once it is setup, you can update it yourself very easily.  There is no reason you need to be dependent on your web developer.
  3. Hosting is only $4.95 a month to self host your blog.  I recommend Host Gator as their customer service is amazing and they specialize in Word Press.  For the $4.95 a month, you get email and can actually host other sites.
  4. A wordpress blog is built in PHP – which is a common language used to build websites.  This means you can do anything you want with a wordpress blog (you might need a developer but it is minimal compared to what it would cost to build your website)
  5. After you build your website, you still need traffic…..how are you going to do that?  With wordpress, you can drive a tremendous amount of traffic in a short amount of time.  It means search engines can easily find your information and rank you higher.
  6. By adding just one post a week to your blog, the search engines will love your fresh content and constantly come back to rank your site.
  7. If you are doing any type of Social Networking (twitter, linkedin, facebook, plaxo, etc.) you can have your blog posts automatically tied to your Social Networking sites.  This gives you even more exposure.
  8. “Sticky” refers to being able to get people to leave their name and email in exchange for something valuable.  You can easily do this with a WordPress Blog by using a form from iContact, Constant Contact, Sales Force, OneShoppingCart or any other email management system.  You can also use Feedburner to capture emails.
  9. “Smart” refers to being able to automate a part of the business.  Typically when you grab those emails you need an autoresponder system to automatically convert those leads into paying clients.  At the very minimum you will want to keep your name in front of these prospects with valuable tips and information. Your email management system or Feedburner can do this as well.
  10. Any time you refer someone to your blog, it feels you are giving them a resource and value.  When you refer someone to a website, it feels like you are trying to sell them.  Become the resource and earn their trust….they will naturally buy something if there is a fit.
  11. You can easily add audio and video to your blog without any 3rd party software.  For audio, you can record audio using Sound Forge Audacity (a free program).  For video, take the video with your digital camera and upload it to YouTube.com.  You then add the embed code (conveniently given to you on YouTube.com) and VIOLA! You have full multimedia capabilities.  In fact, you can use other people’s videos in your blog for quick and easy content.
  12. Building a website can be a time consuming process.  I was able to get this blog up and going within a few hours and I have no experience programming sites.  In fact, I taught my 6.5 year old daughter how to create her own blog…that is how easy it is.

My whole philosophy this year is to simplify.  Having a blog that I can update and manage myself has become a total blessing.  I only wished that I knew about WordPress Blogs 9 years ago.  I would have recommended everyone to leverage their website investment by learning Social Networking to help drive traffic to their blog instead of having a “Smart And Sticky” website where they still need marketing.

What do you choose?  Blog or Website? What makes you choose that?
